ABOUT THE BRAND
What is Yay area thrifts?
Yay Area Thrifts is a multidisciplinary production company with fashion focused curation’s. We’re here to close the gap between sourcing when looking for a creative team for your project, portrait’s or performance. We provide wardrobe styling, creative direction, hairdresser and/or photographer all in house; we also contract local talent from the bay when outsourcing. We take pride in the love and loyalty we have to the soil, with that said there’s no denying it being plagued with colonial disease.
Everything personal is political by designed. The intention behind us is to express the fluidity of gender. It was never binary, colonizer’s continuously impose their white values, worldwide. History find’s it’s way of repeat itself, if you don’t honor the past you won’t know your future. Collectively we need to stop perpetrating colonial thinking and start existing outside the boxes we’ve been indoctrinated into. No matter how you perform for the world. Fabric has no assigned gender or genitalia.
Why gender base clothes?
For control & labels.
Who’re the gatekeeper’s of fashion? Who decides when it goes from “ghetto” to fashionable? What exactly is sustainable and who are the one’s privilege enough to live a sustainable lifestyle?
Being resourceful is not an option but a means of survival. With a major influx in the thrifting community, it’s no longer accessible too low income communities. Due to high inflation of goods many communities are left with outrages prices at chain thrift stores. Although there’s a larger topic at hand when it comes to gentrification and CEO’s of multibillion companies, there’s no denying the demonization of low-income communities when it comes to second hand fashion.
Globally children and women continue to be exploited for cheap labor in manufacturing facilities making clothes that reflected the environment it was created in. The clothes we no longer want, donated to which then end up washed up in shores or burned further polluting our water air, and soil. We directly aren’t to blame for a system put in place to make someone rich and the rest suffer.
We’re here to decolonize our minds, pussy stunt, practice the art of intention & being mindful in how we navigate our earth.
We need to see the correlation how mother earth and femme’s bodies are treated the same. She give’s us everything we’ve ever needed, she must be protected.
